I'm a 2004 graduate of Bridgeport High School and I find this to be very silly, for lack of better words. I do understand non christians being upset about this but I ask why not just ask to put up your belief or "master teacher." I'm a christian and never even noticed this picture up in the hall way and I walked past it daily. The picture was supposidly placed on the wall as an example of a master teacher. I'm not saying that for a fact that is just hear say in a small town. It is not there to push religion. Religion was NEVER pushed in our high school. In fact, youth rallies that were held in other highschools in our county were not held at our school due to this issue of "religion." There is an insider view for ya'll.

""I have absolute respect for anyone who looks at the painting for comfort," Sklar said. "This is just a pure constitutional issue."

Okay, herein lies the insanity of this mentality. This would make a little more sense if he complainer's position was that he was an atheist or of some of other religious background and was uncomfortable sending his kids to that particular school. But to say he "respects" those who find comfort in the picture, he's just trying to get it removed because it's some kind of "pure" Constitutional issue is not an act of Constitutional selflessness, it's one person forcing society to conform to his wishes.

If the constituents of that school district haven't had a problem with this picture for decades, who is he to say that they are wrong, simply because he wants to make it an issue and for no other reason? Sure, he has that right but then he has no business saying that he "respects" the very people he is beating on with the Constitution, for no substantive reason that is made clear in this article!

To Jenee,

can you find a school district in this country willing to put up a picture of L.Ron Hubbard or Satan and then support it? Isn't that like saying that I can't own a hunting rifle because than my neighbor should be able to place a scud missile on top of his garage?

I would make the case that if a community wanted to name a school after Hubbard (on the local dime), that should be their perogative and one person shouldn't have the final say, simply because they think that their own principles and interpretations are superior to everyone elses.

As someone who doesn't believe religious icons belong in any public institutions, this sort of situation always intrigues me. It sounds as if you think it's ridiculous that the ACLU wants to remove the picture of Jesus so I wonder how you would feel if an image of L. Ron Hubbard or even Satan was added to that wall?
