Democrats, The Party Of Amygdala?

According to The Hill Democrats have a difficult time relaying their messages to the average voter. A more comprehensive message is needed to sufficiently relay Democrat Party talking points to the electorate. Democrats feel that they have been remiss in this all important need of mind control. So a new tack has to be taken in order to reel in a larger constituency.

Democrats are losing the battle for voters’ hearts because the party’s message lacks emotional appeal, according to a widely circulated critique of House Democratic communications strategy.

“Our message sounds like an audit report on defense logistics,” wrote Dave Helfert, a former Appropriations spokesman who now works for Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii). “Why are we defending [the State Children’s Health Insurance Program] instead of advocating a ‘Healthy Kids’ plan?”

Helfert sent the memo this week to an e-mail list of all Democratic press secretaries and communications directors after staffers met on Monday to discuss rolling out the Democrats’ latest message.

Later in the memo this amazing little known fact as to how the Republicans target parts of the brain that Democrats don’t:

His memo is sharply critical of Republican policies but also suggests a neurological explanation for Republican message success: By using emotional appeals and warning of dire threats, Republicans can trigger neurons called “amygdalae” in the temporal lobe, which is the seat of the “fight or flight” response in the brain.

“Almost every Republican message contains a simple and direct moral imperative, a stark contrast between good and evil, right and wrong, common sense and fuzzy liberal thinking,” Helfert wrote. “Meanwhile, we’re trying to ignite passions with analyses of optimum pupil-teacher ratios.”

Now I have done some research into the amygdalae and have found this about a comic book hero and a nemesis Amygdala . Amygdala seems to mirror the Democrats dilemma. The removal of their amygdalae resembling this characters :

Amygdala

Amygdala is the alias of DC Comics character Aaron Helzinger, who is a sometime opponent of Batman. He has reduced mental capacity, is prone to outbursts of violence and has super-strength due to medical experimentation on his brain, chiefly the removal of his amygdala.

Anatomically, the amygdala refers to the bundle of nerves in the brain that control emotional associations of many kinds. Helzinger’s amygdala cluster was removed in an attempt to cure him of his homicidal rage (apparently by a doctor who did not understand the difference between the amygdala and the hypothalamus). This procedure resulted in Amygdala becoming exceedingly angry and was the opposite of what the surgery was supposed to achieve. Easily led due to his childlike nature, Amygdala has been the pawn of a number of Batman villains, but when properly medicated, he can be peaceful.

Now this is the crux of the problem. The Democrats haven’t been properly medicated yet.

This is becoming a huge story on the right blogosphere and frankly if you ever thought that we don’t live in an echo chamber, you would be wrong. We do. The operative is exactly right. To win the debate we each have to appeal to the most primitive emotions. More importantly, the Dems are doing it much better than the Reps, and yet the right blogosphere is pretending that the polling doesn’t say that the people overwhelmingly approve of SCHIP, and continues to snicker at the Dems.

You are all snickering at the wrong group. You should be snickering at the Reps since they are losing politically. Instead, you are all discussing some trivial story about what some operative thinks, correctly mind you, of the way to approach this debate. Do you really think the public is going to change its mind because some Dem operative used some funny sounding word. They aren’t.

After the last veto I said there was an opening for the Reps on SCHIP I was hoping they would take it but so far they are AWOL.

The fact is the narrative right now is that the Reps are heartless war mongers who care more about an endless war than they do about poor kids.

If the right blogosphere really wants to hyperanalyze something as trivial as a funny sounding word, that is their business however they do it only because they find themselves in an echo chamber that actually believes the public is on their side.
