Carrageenan

Carrageenan is an ingredient that is found in almond or coconut milk. It is one of the ingredients written on the carton of the products of various drinks and foodstuffs. It is usually extracted from the known red edible seaweeds since it is a polysaccharide. The primary purpose of the component is to thicken and stabilize properties. Thus acts as a critical element in keeping food.This element is not digestible and does not have any nutrition.  Its main function is thickening products as it is often used found in organic and general natural products. Although it is derived naturally, it is destructive to the human digestive system leading to invade of a pathogen such as salmonella. Their two form of this carrageenan: undergraded and degraded. Among these two types carrageenan undergraded is usually approved to be used in food. It is the one which is labeled amongst other ingredients.  The degraded one is not recommended for food. Many animal studies are usually done using the degraded one. It does not muddy the water. When this degraded component is used in high concentration, it quickly leads to cancer. The food-grade carrageenan has never been indicated to cause cancer.

Carrageenan in most research done is usually linked to intestinal irritation, permeability, and colon ulcers. Thus people should always be careful when using this product.This component is found in most infant formulas and store-bought milk.
